Fasting is not easy. But that’s kind of the point!
One of the reasons we are called to fast is so that we can learn to satisfy our deepest needs and desires in our relationship with the Lord.
God created our bodies and spirits with physical and emotional needs. Food, shelter, belonging, relationship, all these things he created as things we need to function well.
But God didn’t intend for our need for these things to supersede our need for Him. That’s what the discipline of fasting is for! When we periodically fast, denying our bodies of our physical needs, or denying our emotional need for human approval, it forces us to rely on the Father, refocusing our attention on Him as the supplier and fulfiller of all of our needs.
The only way we can be truly fulfilled is through a close, intimate relationship with the Father.
“As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. I thirst for God, the living God.”
- Psalm 42:1-2 NLT
Lord, thank you that you can supply and fulfill all of my needs. Help me to draw closer to you during this period of fasting. In Jesus’ name, amen.
