Whomp Whomp

Posted: November 16, 2016

There used to be a hilarious fictional character on Saturday Night Live named Debbie Downer. She was always pulling the conversation down with her statements about the latest bad news, scary statistic, or personal problem. All of her statements were followed by the "whomp whomp" sound, mirroring the negative impact that her speech had on the people and the environment around her. As funny as she was on the show, in reality, no one likes being around a Debbie Downer!

Why? Because being around a Debbie Downer is depressing, exhausting and downright miserable!

Now on the other side of things, not being a Debbie Downer doesn’t mean that everything we say will 100% of the time be happy, positive and fluffy, because that’s not real life. But a Debbie Downer can’t ever seem to get past her negativity and complaints, not even for a minute.

As believers, we are called shine the light of Christ, and have joy in our salvation! If the world sees a bunch of Christians who are Debbie Downers, always speaking negativity, what would make them want to know our God?

“May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”
- Psalm 19:14 NLT

Lord, thank you that our salvation through Jesus gives us joy. Help us to meditate on the truth of your word so that joy will overflow out of our mouths. In Jesus’ name, amen.
