What's Your Assignment?

Posted: March 28, 2017

I used to love being in school. If I could do one thing, I would be a student forever! I just always loved learning, working hard to understand the material, and having those awesome “lightbulb” moments when something finally clicks in your brain and suddenly you understand it! I also enjoyed the satisfaction of completing assignments, and receiving good grades when I had worked hard on a project.

I’ll never forget though, in college, I had an assignment in one of my Bible classes to DRAW a picture of Jesus’ second coming…white horse and all.

Let me just tell you, not only do I not like to draw, I am just plain terrible at it. Although I tried my best, my horse looked like an unsightly oversized dog, and Jesus, in his white robe and all his glory, looked like a sorry excuse for a caricature. I remember all throughout completing that assignment thinking to myself, “This is THE dumbest assignment ever. How can it be teaching me anything? All it is doing is pointing out my weaknesses and making me feel helpless. I don’t want to do this silly assignment!”

Now, even though I thought the assignment was unnecessary, frustrating or silly, my instructor obviously felt it was essential to the curriculum, and therefore was too important to skip. Even though I didn’t necessarily agree with it, my instructor had important reasons for me to complete this assignment, and if I chose not to complete it, it would affect my GPA in a painful way.

When God gave Jonah the assignment to go to Nineveh, he initially chose not to accept or complete the assignment. But the assignment was important to God. So important, that when Jonah tried to skip it, it affected him in a painful way.

What assignment from God are you trying to ignore? Even if you don’t understand your assignment, or find it frustrating or downright silly, I guarantee you any assignment from God is important to God and worth completing with your best effort!

“The Lord gave this message to Jonah son of Amittai: ‘Get up and go to the great city of Nineveh. Announce my judgment against it because I have seen how wicked its people are.’"
- Jonah 1:1 NLT

Lord, forgive me for dismissing assignments from you when I don’t think they are necessary or important. Give me the strength, the ability and the right attitude to complete the assignments you’ve given me, because I know they are important to you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
