The Parrot Stage

Posted: May 15, 2017

I have a 20-month old daughter, who is very into the “parrot” stage as I like to call it. Whatever I say, she will try to repeat, good or bad. As much as I hate to admit it, there has been a time or two where she has repeated something I’ve said that I don’t actually want her to repeat. Like when I dropped something the other day and said, “Crap!,” which she quickly and joyfully repeated, over and over again.

As horrible and somewhat funny as that example is, it got me thinking, “Am I speaking words and living a life worthy of imitating?” If my daughter, sweet and still very innocent, imitated all of my words and actions, would I be proud of how she has behaved?

Now let me ask you, if someone were to imitate you for a whole day, what would that look like? Would you be proud of their actions or embarrassed?

The best person we can imitate is Christ, so that our example is one worth following.

And you should imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.”
- 1 Corinthians 11:1 NLT

Lord, thank you that we have Christ as an example of how to live. Help us to imitate His words, His actions and His love in all we do, so that we can draw others close to you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
