The Light of Life

“If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” - John 8:12
So...how's your year going? We're almost halfway through it! For some of us, 2017 was a great year. But for others, 2017 was a dark year. Maybe it was poor health, a failing marriage, worry for children, addictions that hold us captive, or depression and anxiety that torment the mind. So how do we step out of the darkness and into the light? Jesus put it simply -- follow Him!
Following Him simply starts by spending time with Him. As in any relationship, you have to get to know the person, study them, and make an effort. This comes through a prayer life (simply talking to Jesus as you would to a friend) and allowing Him to talk back. When searching for answers, read His word (this is His journal, His love letters to us) and fast. Fasting draws us into the presence of God quickly because we become more vulnerable and dependent on Him to sustain us and uphold us, therefore we hear Him more easily.
Yes, we all have time restraints and feel like we never have this time to invest and get to know Him, but time isn’t as hard to give as we think. Simply driving to and from work in prayer, or intentionally listening to the Christian radio to worship Him and draw into His presence is a start. Fasting and praying over our lunch break, or when the alarm goes off in the morning, talking to Him before our feet even hit the floor…
Praying can be a one hour alone time with Him, but it can also be all-day, moment-by-moment. Give each fear, anxiety, worry, decision, circumstance, frustration and ache to the One we know we can trust with them. Let God be the good and wonderful God we know He is. Seek Him, know Him, follow Him, and step into His light!
Lord, I want to follow you. Teach me moment-by-moment how to do this. I want to know You and follow You so that I never have to walk in darkness again, but instead will have the light that leads to life filled with your goodness and wonder. So help me, Lord, to take time to follow You, because I know Your light is so much better. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
