Set an Example

"Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity." 1 Timothy 4:12
I've noticed a trend in our culture recently - it seems that glorifying my shortcomings is the only way to prove that I'm "real." If I comment on how great any particular thing is in my life, I'm being fake, and I'm even shaming others who don't have/do what I have/do. Yikes!
I have to continually remind myself that I live for an audience of One, and He encourages us to "set an example." Setting an example is not necessarily about posting pictures or sharing quotes, it's more about living my life, day to day, the way God has called me to. I want to have kind speech, conduct myself with integrity, love one another, grow my faith, and live a life of purity because God has called me to. Anyone who happens to see the evidence of those goals (my children, my spouse, my friends, my leaders, my extended family) are receiving the example but they're not the reason I do it. So yes, we need to be an example, as a believer, but we need to remember the only One we're doing it for.
God, help me to remember that I live to please You and You alone. I want to be a good example of a Christ-follower and I want to honor You no matter what those around me are thinking or doing. Amen.
