When I was in college, for four years I taught kid's church to first and second grade girls on Wednesday nights.
It was a blast! The girls were hilarious, fun, smart and silly and I loved watching them learn more about Jesus and grow closer to him.
Each unit of curriculum was focused on a specific scripture verse for memorization. At the end of each unit, if the girls could recite the scripture verse from memory (with NO help!), they would be awarded a special badge, which could be sewn onto their special sash and worn to church each week. You'd be amazed at what first and second graders can memorize!
No doubt, memorizing scripture was a challenge for several of them (and me!), but each verse always had a special song that put the verse to music, which surprisingly made it much easier to remember.
Even to this day, almost 10 years later, I still remember almost every one of those scripture memory songs. It's amazing to me how some of the verses I remember best are the ones set to a song meant for a first grader!
But there's something about singing it out, instead of just memorizing it in my head that really made it stick.
Did you know God doesn't just want you thinking about scripture, he wants you expressing it? Out loud? It's true!
So today, pick a scripture, any scripture, and make up a little song for it. Maybe, just maybe, by singing it out, it'll stick with you for years to come!
"The Word is near you in your mouth and in your heart."
- Romans 10:8 NIV
Lord, thank you that your Word is alive and powerful. Help me to not just memorize it, but to express it out loud, over my life, in all situations. In Jesus' name, amen.
