Same Spirit, Different Gifts

Posted: September 05, 2016

My first few years as a nurse I spent working in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Taking care of babies with life-threatening heart defects, children with rare diseases, or kids who were injured in terrible accidents, many people would say to me, “I don’t know how you do it. I could never take care of a dying child. It takes a special kind of person to do what you do.” But I loved it! The Lord had equipped me with a special passion and strength to take care of children (and their parents) in their most desperate state.

When we moved to a new area without a children’s hospital, I took a job in an adult ICU. I thought taking care of adults wouldn’t be that much different than taking care of children.

Boy was I wrong! Caring for adults was completely different than caring for children. I very quickly learned that I did not have the same passion and strength to take care of adults the way I could with children. In fact, taking care of dying adults was heart-breaking to me! It was more than I could handle and within a few months, I found a job back in pediatrics.

Why do I tell you all this? Because even though there are thousands of nurses around the country, God has equipped me with certain gifts that suit me perfectly for working with children. And thankfully, God has equipped other nurses with certain gifts that suit them perfectly for working with adults. We are all nurses, each with our own kind of service, but all with the same goal, to help people.

So it is with spiritual gifts, too. Though God works differently through each of us, the same Spirit is the source of all of our spiritual gifts. We are all parts of the body of Christ, each with our own spiritual gifts, but all with the same goal, to serve God and glorify him!

“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us.”

- 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 NLT

Thank you Lord that you’ve equipped me with specific spiritual gifts. Help me to use them to glorify you in all that I do. In Jesus’ name, amen.
