Prison Break

Posted: November 19, 2016

Picture the scene: you and your friend are dragged to a busy part of town, surrounded by an angry mob, then wrongly accused of a crime, which results in you both being publicly beaten with wooden rods and thrown into the innermost dungeon of a prison, with your feet clamped in chains.

Naturally, your next move is to start praying and singing hymns to God.

Wait…what?

After being beaten, wrongly imprisoned and shackled like an animal, how could I sing to God at a time like that, you ask?

But that’s exactly what happened to Paul and Silas, and that’s exactly what they did!

It’s amazing that their response after all they went through was to lift their voices through prayer and singing to God.

And do you know what happened after that? There was a massive earthquake that shook the prison, opening all the doors and causing all the chains to fall off! Wow!

Imagine if you reacted to your unfair, painful or brutal circumstances in life how Paul and Silas did. What if you chose to lift your voice in prayer and worship, regardless of the situation? What kind of chains would fall off in your life?

Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening. Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off!”
- Acts 16:25-26 NLT

Lord, help me to lift my voice to you in prayer and praise regardless of the circumstances in my life. In doing so, let my praise to you cause the chains in my life to fall off! In Jesus’ name, amen!
