“You prepare a feast for me
in the presence of my enemies.
You honor me by anointing my head with oil.
My cup overflows with blessings.
Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me
all the days of my life,
and I will live in the house of the Lord
- Psalm 23:5-6 NLT

I love this passage of scripture from Psalm 23. If you are like me, when you read things, you try to paint a picture of the scene in your mind, thinking about what it would actually look like if the words on the page were acted out in front of you.

So picture it: God prepares a feast for you. Your enemies are there, but at a distance, because God is close beside you and your enemies are afraid of Him. God invites you to the table, honoring you as the featured guest by anointing your head with oil. Because of this action, you are overwhelmed with gratefulness and can’t help but exclaim, “My cup overflows with blessings!” Even though your enemies are present, you are seated at the table with God! Nothing can dampen or discourage you in this moment. Even though your enemies are lurking in the distance, you are not afraid. You know and proclaim (almost as if you’re saying it out loud just so your enemies will hear you say it) that God’s goodness and unfailing love will pursue you your whole life, and that someday you will spend eternity in Heaven with Him.

What a picture!

Lord, thank you that your Word is alive and active. Thank you that you are good, and that your unfailing love and goodness will follow me my whole life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
