I would imagine not many of us have been a suspect in a murder trial. But imagine, one day, you were arrested as a murder suspect. I have never been to court, but if I were ever brought to trial before a judge and a jury in a courtroom, I would surely want an advocate, someone who knows the law and the judge, to represent me and plead on my behalf. The thought of trying to do it alone would be terrifying!
It’s the same way in life (although hopefully we’ll never be on trial for murder). God has given us the Holy Spirit as our advocate and teacher for the complicated situations we will face in life. When we are confused, scared, hurt, without resources or the faintest idea of what to do next, the Holy Spirit is with us and will plead for us and direct us in every situation.
“But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.”
- John 14:26 NLT
Lord, thank you for sending the Holy Spirit as our advocate and our teacher. As we walk through difficult situations in life, help us to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading and trust that he will be our advocate. In Jesus’ name, amen.
