Many Parts, One Body

Posted: September 06, 2016

Hopefully you have never had to be on crutches. But if you have, I don’t need to tell you how inconvenient it is. Not only can you not use your leg, but crutches also require the use of your arms to get around. So not only are you down the use of one leg, but also the use of both your arms!

It’s impossible to carry anything, open doors, or do many of the things you are accustomed to doing without trouble. It is frustrating and discouraging, to say the least.

I have only been on crutches a few times in my life, but every time I was distinctly reminded of how thankful I am for each of my body parts and their specific function. When my leg wasn’t functioning properly, I was thankful for my healthy leg and healthy arms that helped me function until my leg was healed.

As the body of Christ, we must value and lean on each person’s gifting and special function. They fill a need that you can’t fill, and you fill a need that they can’t fill. Just like you lean on your arms while using crutches when your leg is not functioning properly, we can lean on each other and strengthen and encourage each other throughout our journey on this earth.

“Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.”

- Romans 12:4-5 NLT

Lord, thank you for each person’s special function in the body of Christ. Help us to strengthen and encourage each other in our own specific gifting to benefit the body as a whole. In Jesus’ name, amen.
