When I was a child I heard from a Sunday School teacher about how the word "joy" can be an acronym for "Jesus...Others...You." The point was that if you put Jesus first, others second, and yourself third, you will have joy!
We always need to bring balance to these little quips (if you always put yourself last, you will be anything but joyful!) but the principle stands: Every day we show the world our priorities through our choices, sometimes unconsciously, and if consistently put self first, we will never have true joy. Jesus said very plainly:
"You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: Love your neighbor as yourself." Matthew 22:37-39
Jesus, I long to love you more, love you better, and to treat my neighbors how I would want to be treated. I know that I can never "arrive" in terms of love, so give me eyes to see and ears to hear how You would want me to extend the love You've given to me. Amen.
