I DESERVE IT...right?

Our culture today is often contrary to the truth of scripture. Many in the younger generations that are now coming into adulthood have the idea that, “I DESERVE IT,” whatever “it” may be. That job promotion? I DESERVE IT. That new car? I DESERVE IT. That special seat or award or whatever it may be…I DESERVE IT! Why? Because I am the most important thing in the world!
Culture screams at you that YOU are the most important thing. The world should revolve around YOU, and if it doesn’t, kick and scream and pout until it does! Culture instructs us to do whatever it is that makes YOU happy, regardless of how it causes you to treat others. If in making YOU happy, you dishonor or disrespect others, oh well! YOU have the right to be happy! If YOU don’t make sure the world sees YOU as important, who will?
But God’s Word tells us otherwise:
“When you are invited to a wedding feast, don’t sit in the seat of honor. What if someone who is more distinguished than you has also been invited? The host will come and say, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then you will be embarrassed, and you will have to take whatever seat is left at the foot of the table! Instead, take the lowest place at the foot of the table. Then when your host sees you, he will come and say, ‘Friend, we have a better place for you!’ Then you will be honored in front of all the other guests. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
- Luke 14:8-11 NLT
You are valuable and important to God, but you don’t have to prove that to others around you. Contrary to our culture that tells you to live proudly, exalting yourself to the highest place, let me encourage you to live humbly, and let God be the one to exalt you instead of your peers.
Lord, forgive me for trying to make myself the most important thing. Help me to live humbly, seeking honor from You and not from the world around me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
