Head Versus Heart

Posted: May 09, 2017

It is one thing to hear and know the Word of the Lord. It’s another thing to do what it says.

Have you ever met a someone who knows the Bible back and forth, but is hateful, disrespectful or without compassion?

Just knowing the Word of God does not mean that you have gained true understanding. That’s part of why Jesus spoke in parables when he taught. He wanted to test our hearts to see if they were softened enough to understand and apply His teachings into our lives.

Because he didn’t always make the point completely obvious in his parables, it requires us to seek Him with our hearts while understanding the Scriptures, so that we can know how to apply them in our lives. Instead of just hearing the rules and following them simply because we know them, God wants us to follow Him by choice, out of the desires of our heart. Not just because he says so.

“‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.’"
- Matthew 15:8 NLT

Lord, thank you that you give wisdom and understanding when we read your Word. Help us not to honor you only with our lips, but to have a heart that is in a close relationship with you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
