Guilty by Association

Posted: September 28, 2016

So I’ve been watching this show lately about Customs and Border Protection, and it’s fascinating!! It’s like a car accident, I want to look away but can’t stop watching! You’d be amazed (and disturbed) by some of the ways people try to smuggle things past customs.

But one of the things that I find so interesting is the majority of peoples’ first response to the authorities finding a prohibited substance in their bag or on their person. Can you guess what they all say?

“That isn’t mine! It belongs to my friend.”

And whether or not that statement is true, the Border Protection officers always have the same response.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s yours or not, and it doesn’t matter if you’re carrying it for someone else. If it’s in your bag or on your person, it’s considered yours. You bear the responsibility and will have to take the punishment!”

The crazy thing is, many of the drug smugglers aren’t actually drug users themselves. But even though they aren’t drug users, they end up going to prison for carrying the drugs for their “friends.” Talk about guilty by association!

The same can be true with the friends you associate with. Will their actions and behaviors cause you to suffer? Will you bear the consequences of their decisions?

“Walk with the wise and become wise. Associate with fools and get in trouble.” - Proverbs 13:20 NLT

Thank you, Lord, for your guidance in our relationships. Help me to identify the “fools” in my life and remove them so that I can walk with the wise. In Jesus’ name, amen.
