Do you remember what it felt like when you first fell in love with someone?
Everything you see reminds you of the person you love (whether it makes sense or not!). Everything you hear somehow relates back to the one you love. Your friends and family get sick of hearing about so-and-so, because you always work them into the conversation. You just can’t stop talking about how awesome they are!
But as time goes on and the newness wears off, the passion you felt as first can fade. It doesn’t mean you’re any less in love with that person, but as your lives get busy and responsibilities pile up and the deep desire and attachment you felt at first has somehow fizzles out.
That same thing often happens in our relationship with God. As a new believer you are full of energy and passion and love for Christ. You can’t stop thinking about him, singing his praises, and talking about him to others. But then time goes on and your passion and energy for Him fades. You get hurt by someone or you go through tough struggles, and your zeal and passion for him wanes.
It’s normal for that to happen in life, but you don’t have to let it stay that way! Choose to turn back to him with passion anew and serve him with the love you felt for him at first.
“But I have this complaint against you. You don’t love me or each other as you did at first! Look how far you have fallen! Turn back to me and do the works you did at first.”
- Revelation 2:4-5 NLT
Lord, forgive me for letting my love and passion for you fade over time. Restore in me a new and even stronger desire to serve you with all my heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.
