“Joyful are people of integrity, who follow the instructions of the LORD. Joyful are those who obey his laws and search for him with all their hearts."
- Psalms 119:1-2 NLT
Have you ever had someone tell you "you need to find joy" - as if joy was a person you were looking for or a like how you lose your keys sometimes. I find joy (see what I did there?) to be something I can only really receive from God. Not because it's cliche to do so or because the Bible tells me so, but because it just seems to be something I can't find on my own (no pun intended). Apart from God, there is no real joy. But how do you find joy (there it is again) in the Lord?
This verse from Psalm 119 says that you find joy when you are a person of integrity, following and obeying the Lord and seeking him with all you've got.
Following Christ and his instructions is so much more than following rules. It's more than just doing right. To follow Christ is to be like Christ. It is hanging on his every word, like Mary. It is doing whatever you have to do to hear from him, like Zaccheus.
The promise for our obedience is joy. The promise for our seeking and trusting is joy. The promise for following Christ is joy. And Joy that comes from God is a joy that can't be quenched by a rough day or bad news.
So search for him. Listen to him. Obey him. Follow Christ and experience all the fullness of his joy and favor and blessing.
God, thank you for the joy that I have in you. More than anything, I want to trust and obey you. I want to follow you and I want to respond to your word and your leading. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
