Faith Like a Gymnast

Posted: August 12, 2016

The Olympic Games are upon us once again, and if you’re like me, you can’t get enough. I’ll watch almost any sport: swimming, gymnastics, diving, volleyball, tennis, and anything else that’s on!

But my favorite sport to watch is gymnastics. Seeing those girls flip around on the four-inch-wide, four-foot-high balance beam, I wonder what their personal pep talk is like just moments before hopping up on the apparatus to compete. I’ve heard that (like many sports) gymnastics is almost as mentally challenging as it is physically challenging.

When they get up on that beam, if they have any doubt (What if I mess up? What if I fall?), they will falter. They have to believe with their whole heart (and convince their mind) that they will succeed.

Our faith is similar. Jesus instructs us to have faith, and to believe with all your heart when you pray. Like those gymnasts up on the beam, don’t let doubt come in and make your faith falter. When you have faith without doubt, you can move mountains!

Then Jesus said to the disciples, ‘Have faith in God. I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, “May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,” and it will happen. But you must really believe it will happen and have no doubt in your heart. I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours.’”

- Mark 11:22-24 NLT

Lord, thank You that we can put our faith in You. Help us to have faith that can move mountains, for Your glory! In Jesus’ name, amen.
