After God's Heart

Posted: February 13, 2017

Did you know that King David was said to be "a man after [God's] own heart?" It's on the internet so it must be true. Well, by the internet, I mean, the Bible online, cuz, if it's in the Bible, then it's definitely true. I digress.

'I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart. He will do everything I want him to do.' - Acts 13:22

Today I want you to ask yourself if you are someone that is after God's heart. But what does it even mean to be "after God's heart?" That's a really good question.

I've thought about what our relationship with God is supposed to look like. I mean, we have access to him because of Jesus, and Jesus is the way, so it's important to know Jesus. But if we're being honest, I think we would all admit that it’s easy to compartmentalize our relationship with Jesus.  We associate our relationship with Jesus with Church, our Bible, and prayer, but do we actually know him?

Jesus says in John 10 that he is a "Good Shepherd" and that he knows his sheep and his sheep know him. His sheep recognize his voice. They listen when he says things and are attentive to his every command. But most importantly, the sheep stay near to the shepherd. So I guess the better question here is, are you near to the heart of God?

James 4:8 says:

Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.

If our heart is split between God and something else, that we aren't really near to him at all. And if we aren't near to him, than we can never be "after his heart." Today, ask the Lord if there is anything else in your heart that is taking your attention and affection away from God, and get rid of it. Be fully devoted to Jesus. Be near to him. Be after his heart.

Lord, speak to me today. If anything else is on my heart that shouldn't be there, tell me, and I will remove it from my life. I don't want you to have to compete with anyone or anything else. Be Lord of my life. Be near to me. I want to be near to you. In Jesus' name, amen.
