A Place at the Table
Posted: March 18, 2017
Do you remember the story we heard this past Sunday about King David and Mephibosheth, who was Jonathan’s son, and King Saul’s grandson?
Although it was customary for the new king to kill any remaining relatives of the old king, David did just the opposite. Because he had loved Jonathan (Mephibosheth's father) like a close brother and had made a vow to him to treat his family with love, David showed mercy and kindness to Mephibosheth. Not only did he not kill him as the law would allow, but instead he invited him to the palace to eat at his table regularly!
This story is such a reflection of God’s love and kindness towards us. Even though we deserve death according to the law, Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross not only lets us live, but gives us a place at the table in Heaven, where we will get to live with Jesus, our king, forever!
“Mephibosheth bowed respectfully and exclaimed, ‘Who is your servant, that you should show such kindness to a dead dog like me?’”
- 2 Samuel 9:8 NLT
Lord, thank you that even though we were dead in our sin, you have given us life through Jesus Christ and have invited us to live with you forever in Heaven. In Jesus’ name, amen.
