Challenging the Norm

Posted: June 29, 2016

The life of Jesus is inspiring, to say the least. He was constantly challenging the law, the standard, the norm, yet doing it with love and justice, grace and truth. When the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery to Jesus, they reminded him that the punishment for her offense according to the Law of Moses was stoning to death. But instead of getting tripped up on legalities, Jesus calmly stated, “let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone” (John 8:7 NLT). And with that, one by one the woman’s accusers left.

Think about it, without Jesus’ influence that woman would’ve been stoned! But Jesus, full of grace and truth challenged the law, astounded the Pharisees and gave the woman a brand new life and future. That’s the kind of influence we should seek to have in our own lives!

“Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, ‘I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.’”

- John 8:12 NLT

Jesus, thank you for the example you set as a life of influence. Help us to seek you each day, so that our influence will point others toward your truth. In Jesus’ name, amen.
