God has a funny way of winning battles in the Bible. When you think of battle-winning tactics and strategies, logically you’d want to make sure you have more soldiers and stronger weapons to give you the advantage over your enemy. But when Moses and the Israelites were being chased by the Egyptian army, God split the Red Sea to protect the Israelites and then destroy the Egyptians. At the battle of Jericho, he had Joshua and the Israelites march around the town for seven days, blow rams’ horns and shout loudly to bring down the walls of Jericho. And before going to battle with the Midianites, God reduced Gideon’s army from thirty-two thousand men to only three hundred men!
So why does God do all these seemingly strange, unconventional things in battle? Because he wants to make it clear that in these battles, He is the champion. It’s not the strength, wisdom or bravery or any of these men that won the victory, it was a miracle of God!
“The Lord said to Gideon, ‘You have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel would boast against me, ‘My own strength has saved me.’”
- Judges 7:2 NIV
Lord, thank you for giving us victory through You, and help us to remember it is only because of You that we are victorious. You are mighty and awesome and You deserve all praise! In Jesus’ name, amen.
